Goals for 2017: Dream BigEvery year, I like to take a few moments to reflect on all the things that happened (or didn’t happen) over the past 12 months. The good, the bad, and everything in between. Why do I do this? So I can see where I might have missed some things and to see other areas that I over-achieved. This year, I’m going to share it all with you in hopes that you can learn from my mistakes and be inspired by my successes. So here it is … my year in review!

January started off pretty slow for me. So did February. And March… Q1 was so slow, in fact, that I was really getting worried. I began viewing my business as a house of cards soon to come crashing down around me.

In April, I took a short trip to Mexico with my husband to shake off the frustrations of those first few months. Fortunately, that break was just what I need to change my thinking. I remembered that I am in control of my future. I am the one in charge of the success or failure of my business.

I am the leading lady of my own life!

And that’s when things started to turn in the direction I wanted.

I stepped up my game for existing clients, which led to new referrals. I put myself “out there” in new, uncomfortable ways and began to network again, which led to new prospects, and eventually new clients.

I even started to reach out to the big players in my space. I sent an email to Bob Bly, a man who has inspired me in many ways throughout my journey, asking if I could write something for his audience. And guess what, he said yes. He even gave me a topic. So I wrote a short article about keyword research, which he sent out to his email list, and my website views went through the roof!

Lesson for you

Take action! You can’t have what you don’t ask for. Don’t be afraid to reach out to those you look up to. They’re just people, just like you and me. And more often than not, they’re happy to help if they can.

I also decided that it was time for me to get back into the speaking world. I’d been talking about it for a while, but wasn’t taking any action. So I stepped up and challenged myself to get back in the game. I reached out to a local group, Guelph Women in Networking (GWIN) and asked if they’d have me as a guest speaker to share some SEO Copywriting tips and tricks. And guess what, they said yes. Not only did I meet some amazing, like-minded business women, but they paid me to be the guest of honour, which I honestly wasn’t expecting.

By taking action and reaching outside of my comfort zone, not only did I shake off some of the rust and get back into the speaking world (which really boosted my confidence, btw), but I also got some great business out of it! Even more importantly, I made some amazing connections, which already have my 2017 starting out with a bang.

Lesson for you

Step out of your comfort zone. Yes, it’s uncomfortable. No, it won’t kill you. To the contrary, in fact, when you challenge yourself to do something new and uncomfortable, it can lead to big business and it will boost your confidence.

Another thing I did in 2016 was to focus on giving more to others. I decided to help others reach their business goals in any way I could. Mostly that meant two things: 1) I was referring business to others, and 2) I was outsourcing work to contractors. I was sharing the wealth.

And guess what … the universe gave back to me in ways I didn’t even think possible. Business boomed – new clients were knocking at my door (without my having to prospect for them), talented new contractors were showing up when I needed them, and just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, I moved two hours west into my dream home overlooking beautiful Lake Huron.

Lesson for you

The more you give, the more you get in return. It’s the simple law of attraction. When you help others – which is ridiculously fulfilling, by the way – you indirectly help yourself. When you share with others, you put out that kickass vibe into the universe – one of abundance and gratitude – and just like a boomerang, you attract more of it into your own life.

So that was pretty much my 2016 in a nutshell. A bit of a slow start, then reclaiming control, taking action and becoming the leading lady of my own life. Obviously this blog was a result of last year’s awesomeness, too 😉

Goals for 2017

Now it’s time to set some goals for 2017. I’m not talking about new year’s resolutions that I won’t keep, I stopped with those years ago. What I am talking about is setting some realistic (albeit hefty!) goals for the year – personally and professionally.

I have a ritual I like to do every year. After the stroke of midnight, when the new year is officially here, I write down all the things I want to accomplish in the coming year. I jot it all down on a piece of paper, then I burn the paper, and as the smoke rises up, I put the intention of my thoughts out into the universe.

My full list is too long to share here, but some of the things I’m planning for this year are…

  1. Writing a book. I am a writer after all, so that just makes sense. I’ve led a colourful life and I know deep down that I have a ton to share with others, so this year I’m going to do that. Tell my story, share the lessons I’ve learned and inspire women around the world to become the leading lady of their life.
  2. The book is paired with this website. I want to make this site a place where women can come together and lift each other up, support one another, inspire and be inspired. That’s my mission.
  3. Build my business. Last year ended amazingly and I plan on using that as a springboard to triple revenue this year. After all, the more money my business makes, the more people I can employ and share the wealth.
  4. With that in mind, I am committing to getting out there to play with the big-wigs, to speak at the big conferences, to teach others how to be successful in their businesses.
  5. I’m also building strategic alliances to create and host actionable seminars for those who want to take their business to the next level.

OK – your turn. It’s a new year — a completely blank slate. The past is in the past, and you have the whole year ahead of you. Will you join me in making 2017 the best year yet? What are some of your goals for 2o17? Share with me in the comments below.

And, of course, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help!

Cheers,

Aimee
